Museum Elbinsel Wilhelmsburg. Drawings from the First World War 1914-1915
The more than 300 drawings from art classes from 1914 and 1915 on the subject of World War I preserved in the Hamburg Museum Elbinsel Wilhelmsburg are divided into 4 class sets from 3 ages (10 to 14 years). They were created in elementary school 3 in Wilhelmsburg (today Hamburg) at the beginning of World War I on the topics of ground warfare, aerial warfare, naval warfare and military hospital.
From a child’s point of view, the feeling of superiority fueled by German war propaganda is portrayed through large combat scenes, as well as the enthusiasm for weapon technology.

The suffering of individuals is rarely emphasized, e.g. this woman fleeing the burning house with the child or the pastor on the way from the hospital to the church.

The hospital drawings also show only well-cared-for wounded people, who are cared for maternally by mostly oversized nurses.
Graves only appear on two drawings. Once depersonalized as a row grave or individually as a “heroic death” grave.

In drawing lessons, these students were influenced by war propaganda and euphoria, but in detail this are independent works. Of course, it should be borne in mind that the Great War was only just beginning and that gas and tank operations only came later. The German civilian population was not directly affected by hostilities. So the peaceful life at home is drawn.

Children’s drawings in context with games and media worlds of the 1980s
By Dr. Christoph-Maria Scholter
Collected, documented and archived in here, you find children’s drawings concerning games and media worlds of the 1980s and also historical sources. The emphasis is put on the drawings of boys. The free-style drawings by hand make an important contribution towards understanding juvenile forms of expression and processes of appropriation but also regarding the importance of mass media influence. The drawings also offer insights into the social environment and esthetic socialisation of children in historical context.
